Domain Renewal & Lifecycle

Your domain doesn’t last forever; it has to be renewed periodically to stay under your control. Understanding the domain life‑cycle helps you avoid losing your domain and prevents costly redemption fees.

## Typical domain lifecycle

1. **Registration** – When you register a domain, it becomes active for a fixed term (usually one year, though you can register for multiple years upfront).
2. **Active period** – During the active period, your domain resolves normally and can be renewed at the regular rate. IllusionCloud will send renewal reminders to the email address on file as the expiry date approaches.
3. **Grace period** – If you miss the renewal date, most TLDs offer a short grace period (often 0–30 days). During this time your domain may stop resolving, but you can still renew it at the standard price through your client area.
4. **Redemption period** – After the grace period, the domain enters redemption (also called the recovery period) for around 30 days. You can still recover it, but the registry charges a significantly higher fee. This is your last chance to retain ownership.
5. **Pending delete** – Once the redemption period ends, the domain enters a pending delete stage and is scheduled to be released. After deletion, it becomes available for anyone to register. Domain squatters often watch deleted domains, so once it’s gone you may not get it back.

## Best practices for renewals

- **Enable auto‑renew**: The simplest way to prevent expiry is to enable auto‑renew in your IllusionCloud account. We’ll attempt to process payment before the expiration date and notify you of any issues.
- **Keep contact details up to date**: Ensure your account and domain contacts use an email address you monitor so you receive renewal reminders and important notices.
- **Register for multiple years**: If you’re committed to a name, registering it for several years in advance provides cost certainty and lessens the risk of accidental expiry.
- **Monitor expiration dates**: You can view your domain expiry dates in the client portal under **Domains**. Make a note of these dates so you’re aware of upcoming renewals.
- **Consider grace & redemption fees**: If a domain does lapse, renew it as quickly as possible. Redemption fees can be expensive, and once it enters pending delete there’s no guarantee you can reclaim it.

By staying on top of renewals and understanding the domain lifecycle, you ensure your domain remains in your control and you avoid losing your brand to someone else.
