Domain Privacy & WHOIS Protection

When you register a domain name, your name, address, phone number and email are stored in the public WHOIS database. This database is used by registrars and ICANN to identify the owner of a domain, but it also makes your contact details accessible to anyone who looks up your domain. Spammers and scammers can harvest this information to send unsolicited emails, phone calls or even target you with phishing.

## What is domain privacy?

Domain privacy (sometimes called WHOIS privacy or ID protection) is a service that replaces your personal contact details in the public WHOIS record with the details of a proxy service. The registrar still retains your real information behind the scenes for legal and administrative purposes, but it’s not publicly visible. This service protects your privacy, reduces spam and helps prevent identity theft.

## Benefits of WHOIS protection

- **Privacy**: Keeps your personal or business address, telephone number and email off public records.
- **Reduced spam and scams**: With your real contact information hidden, unsolicited phone calls and phishing emails are greatly reduced.
- **Professionalism**: Customers still see that the domain is properly registered while your personal data remains private.
- **Security**: Hiding details makes it harder for attackers to gather information about you or your organisation.

## Enabling domain privacy at IllusionCloud

IllusionCloud offers WHOIS privacy as an add‑on when you register or transfer a domain. If you already have a domain with us, you can enable privacy through the client portal:

1. Log in to your IllusionCloud client area and navigate to **Domains**.
2. Select the domain you wish to protect.
3. Look for the **Privacy Protection** or **WHOIS Privacy** toggle or add‑on. Activate it and follow the prompts to complete the purchase if applicable.
4. Your WHOIS record will update within a few hours to show the proxy details instead of your personal information.

Note that some domain extensions (such as certain country‑code TLDs) do not allow privacy protection due to registry policies. In those cases, you may be required to display some or all of your contact details.

## Additional safeguards

- **Domain locking**: Enable domain lock to prevent unauthorised transfers away from your registrar.
- **Accurate contact details**: Even when using privacy protection, keep your actual contact information up to date with IllusionCloud so you don’t miss renewal reminders or important notices.
- **Auto‑renew**: Turn on auto‑renew for your domains so you don’t accidentally lose ownership.

Protecting your domain privacy helps guard your personal information and keeps your online presence more secure. Consider enabling WHOIS privacy and other protective measures for every domain you register.
