Understanding VPS KVM bandwidth & port speed

IllusionCloud KVM VPSs are provisioned with a 1 Gbps fair‑share network port. This port is shared with other virtual machines on the same host, allowing burst speeds up to 1 Gbps but not guaranteed for sustained transfers. The actual throughput depends on overall host usage and network conditions.

Fair‑share policy & bursting

The fair‑share policy means that:

  • You can burst to the full 1 Gbps rate for short periods (for example, downloading large updates or migrating data).
  • Continuous saturation of the port over long periods (hours) is not permitted. The hypervisor may shape sustained transfers to a lower throughput (typically 600–700 Mbps) to ensure all guests receive adequate bandwidth.
  • If you require a guaranteed dedicated port or higher throughput, consider upgrading to a dedicated server or contacting support for dedicated bandwidth options.

Inbound & outbound traffic

Your VPS port is symmetric, supporting high‑speed inbound and outbound traffic. Keep in mind:

  • Traffic is unmetered but subject to fair use. Excessive abuse (e.g., serving files that generate continuous high traffic) may violate terms of service.
  • The network is designed for low‑latency and low packet loss, making it suitable for game servers, web hosting, and API workloads.
  • All ports are filtered by IllusionCloud’s DDoS protection system to mitigate attacks without impacting legitimate traffic.

Monitoring bandwidth

You can monitor your VPS traffic via the virtualization control panel (WHMCS) or use tools inside your VPS:

  • Use vnstat or iftop on Linux to watch real‑time bandwidth usage.
  • On Windows, open the Task Manager’s Performance tab or use nload within Windows Subsystem for Linux.
  • If you see sustained usage approaching the fair‑share limit, consider throttling your application or scheduling intensive transfers during off‑peak hours.
